State Efforts to Ban or Enforce COVID-19 Vaccine Mandates and Passports

This chart presents the status of individual states’ efforts to ban or enforce private employer mandated vaccinations, mandates on vaccines for state employees and health workers, and vaccine passports. The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced that employers could require workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as long as they did not violate the Americans with Disabilities and the Civil Rights acts. The federal guidance prompted a number of states to prohibit businesses from requiring COVID-19 vaccinations as a condition of work. However, some states have sought to require COVID-19 vaccines for state employees and health workers.
